March 4th | 12-1 pm | The Future of Lawns and the Rise of Native Wildflower Plantings
Lecture by Mike Cranney
Each year across the country, countless resources are spent maintaining what has long been perceived as the “ideal” lawn. This concept is so deeply ingrained in our society that turf grass has become the largest irrigated crop in the United States. Unfortunately, this has proven to be extremely detrimental to the environment, as lawns contribute virtually no ecological value. While our lawns provide us with spaces to enjoy our yards, the notion of requiring vast areas of mown turf is an antiquated one. Mike Cranney, Director of Stewardship, will discuss our organization’s ongoing efforts to educate and empower private landowners to convert lawns into beautiful natural spaces that provide essential native habitat. Attendees will learn how we are using state funding to transform everything from small front yards to entire communities, and what steps they can take to do so on their own properties.
